Consumption of Electric Energy
For 50% of administrative buildings, electricity consumption per 1 m² of used floor area varies from 50,1 to 142,7 kWh/ m². According to energy consumption, we are the most active at work on Tuesdays and then Mondays. Starting with Wednesday, our activity only decreases until the end of the week. The difference between Tuesdays and Fridays (the day we work the least according to consumption data) is 6,01 % in average. This difference is larger in open-space offices than in offices smaller than 200 m² – in this case, the difference is only 3,63 %. Over the weekend, the energy consumption of the average office decreases by 54,17 % compared to the consumption during working days.
When we consider electricity consumption per 1 m² of used floor area, we see that most buildings have the consumption of 52,5 kWh/m² per year. This value very much depends on the technology used in the building and on whether there is cooling technology in the building or not. The average yearly consumption per m² of the whole analyzed set of buildings is 110,6 kWh/ m², the median value of the set is 90,5 kWh/ m². ![Office Building Electricity Consumption](/img/electricity consumption.png)
Water Consumption
The case is very similar with water consumption, which is the highest during working days, in particular on Mondays and then on Tuesdays. Water consumption is the lowest on Fridays. The difference between Mondays and Fridays is 5,89 % in average. During the weekends, water consumption decreases dramatically – by 87 %. The same decrease takes place over state holidays as well. The value of water consumed per square meter of used floor area is most commonly 165 l/ m² a year, and 50% of buildings have the consumption of 160 l/m² to 330 l/m². The average yearly consumption of the whole set of analyzed buildings is 307,6 l/m², the median value of the sample is 235,9 l/m². If the yearly water consumption of your building is lower than the median value of 307,6 l/m², you belong to the better half of administrative buildings in terms of water consumption. ![Water Consumption Office Buildings](/img/water consumption.png)
Heat Consumption
As for gas and heat, the situation is much more complex. Their consumption is influenced not only by our presence in the office, but also by the weather – especially the outside temperature. Therefore, there is no point in comparing individual days of the week as the consumption is parallel to the fluctuation of the outside temperature. However, it is interesting to see what happens to the consumption at weekends and to see whether the regulation of heating is set up correctly. That is why we compared the data from Fridays with those of the nearest Saturdays. The consumption decreased by 28,31 %. As for the Sunday and Monday values, the difference in heat consumption is 38,79%. The value of heat consumption per m² is, for most buildings, 135 kWh/m² a year. The heat consmuption for 50% of buildings varies from 123 to 221 kWh/m², the average consumption equals to 186 kWh/m². This differences are usually determined by the quality of the building envelope and by its qualities in terms of insulation. Most of power waste takes place during the state holidays.
Generally, in terms of consumption it is also valuable to look at the difference between public holidays and weekends. We may consider public holidays comparable to Sundays in terms of the number of people working. However, electric energy consumption is higher by 4-8 % than that on Sundays, and the difference is even bigger when we consider heat consumption. ![Energy Statistics Office Buildings](/img/energy statistics.png)
During public holidays, heat consumption is 28-40 % higher than heat consumption over the nearest weekends, and its value is therefore comparable to a regular working day. This fact shows us that there still is room for further improvement of energy efficiency in commercial buildings.
